In 2002 Kia and I discovered Hirvensalo in Turku, Finland. We found a building plot, nothing more than a piece of agricultural land. The beauty of the natural surroundings seduced us and we decided to construct our dream home and garden there. We commissioned renowned architect Pia Helin to design the residence. Large quantities of earth were brought in to relevel the plot. A few years of hard work later the building was constructed and the work complete.
We traveled extensively and were influenced by English, French and Italian gardens. We designed and created a contemporary garden à la française, which features topiary, vistas, fountains, statues and an allée of cherry trees. A beautiful disorder reigns almost everywhere. An anti-symmetry. The garden is a labour of love, a green haven where we have spent the last fifteen years; digging, planting, weeding, watering, manicuring and creating.
